Collaborating to create a better outcome for Oral Surgeons, Dentists, and Patients.

 

Many Oral Surgeons will join an established oral surgery practice after training and follow a traditional practice model where you generate patient volume by developing referrals from local dentists. Though this practice structure can be successful, the Oral Surgeon has the cost of a full-time staff, building, and more, even though he or she is only performing a few procedures each day. We started asking certain questions and the answers turned into an idea.

Rather than hoping the patient comes to you, why not go to the patient? Rather than carrying significant overhead to do a few surgeries each day, why not perform all of the surgeries a Dentist is referring on one or two days each month in their office? Why not partner with the Dentist so the procedures are performed in a place that’s familiar to the patient with open communication and oversight between the Dentist and Surgeon? Rather than asking the patient to schedule their appointment with an Oral Surgeon, what if the patient could schedule their appointment that day at the dental clinic?

As we answered these questions, it became clear that this practice model could be beneficial for the patient, Dentist, and Oral Surgeon.

How It All Started.

Matthew White and David Ashley have been friends since attending Harding University. David went on to UAB to complete medical school and dental school while Matthew started a financial planning practice in Little Rock. The two discussed investments and business ventures over the years with a vision of working together in the future.

While Matthew developed a specialized financial practice in which he only worked with physicians and dentists, David was completing his oral surgery residency program at UAB. As David began to focus his learning on the world of oral surgery, he started noticing opportunities to help patients in underserved areas within the United States and abroad. After shadowing Oral Surgeons, David quickly realized that he could create a travel oral surgery model in which he could work more efficiently, modernize delivery of oral surgery services, and bring quality care to patients all over the United States.

David started his own oral surgery practice in Birmingham Alabama and decided he would travel elsewhere a few days each week to perform extractions in dental offices nearby. By this time, Matthew had launched other business ventures of his own and had several years of experience counseling other physicians and dentists on how to do so as well. As more and more Dentists and DSO’s inquired with David about coming to their clinics, David realized the work and opportunity was more than any one surgeon could manage.

David pitched the idea of starting a business to Matthew as they once hoped they would and the two decided to start OMS Consulting in 2020.
